The centre is large but well served by the metro, so a base a little further out is still convenient. Guests stay about four nights on average, moving between the Gothic Quarter, Las Ramblas and Barceloneta beach. It is an expensive tourist city, and rates can swing sharply between November and September and between a Monday and a Sunday. This list has 4 335 properties, from a hostel bed to five stars on Passeig de Gràcia. Below is what really drives the price of a stay in Barcelona: the month, the day of the week and the district.
It is cheapest in late autumn. November is usually the bottom of the market, about 22 percent below the average, as the beach season ends. September is the most expensive, up to 40 percent above the average, partly because of the La Mercè festival and trade fairs. The arrival day matters too: Monday is the cheapest, Sunday the most expensive. Barcelona has a fairly flexible market, so about a month ahead is enough for a regular trip. Spring and early autumn are the nicest for sightseeing, before it gets as hot and crowded as in high summer.
Barcelona has a wide price range, because hostel beds and plain guesthouses (hostales) sit alongside boutique hotels in old buildings and five stars on Passeig de Gràcia. The cheapest sleep is in hostels and guesthouses outside the very centre; you pay the most for five stars in the Eixample. Below are indicative nightly rates.
| Property type | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Hostel bed | from approx. EUR 70 |
| Guesthouse room or budget room | from approx. EUR 90 |
| Three-star hotel | from approx. EUR 145 |
| Four-star or boutique hotel | from approx. EUR 185 |
| Five-star or premium hotel | from approx. EUR 360 |
Indicative rates for a double room, outside the September peak. In Barcelona the same hotel can differ between a Monday and a Sunday, so check the real price for your dates in the search above.
The most popular district among guests is the Eixample, with its grid of streets, Casa Batlló and the Sagrada Familia close by. Next to it lies the historic Gothic Quarter with the cathedral and narrow lanes, and Las Ramblas, the promenade down to the port. The highest rates are held by the Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera area, about a third above the city average. The cheapest sleep is further out, in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi and other fringe districts, where prices can be about 30 percent lower. With the dense metro network, a room outside the very centre is still convenient.
From a plain guesthouse in the centre to a boutique hotel with a spa, a few Barcelona names with a from price. Just a starting point, as rates can climb noticeably in September and on weekends.
| Property | Category | Price per night (from) |
|---|---|---|
| Hostal Felipe 2 | Budget | from approx. EUR 90 |
| Hostal Lima | Guesthouse | from approx. EUR 116 |
| Hotel Brick Barcelona | Three-star hotel | from approx. EUR 136 |
| Acta Voraport | Three-star hotel | from approx. EUR 149 |
| 1881 Barcelona Rosellón Hotel | Four-star hotel | from approx. EUR 184 |
| Praktik Èssens | Boutique hotel | from approx. EUR 196 |
| H10 Madison | Four-star hotel | from approx. EUR 211 |
| Casa Camper Barcelona | Design hotel | from approx. EUR 227 |
| Hotel Pulitzer Barcelona | Hotel with a rooftop terrace | from approx. EUR 260 |
| Yurbban Passage Hotel & Spa | Premium hotel | from approx. EUR 363 |
From prices for a double room. In Barcelona the same hotel can differ a lot between a Monday and a weekend, so check your exact dates in the search.
It is more expensive in summer and early autumn, when the beaches and attractions are packed. Prices rise most in September, partly because of the La Mercè festival with its processions, fireworks and Castells human towers, and the trade fairs. For those dates it is worth booking ahead. The cheapest and quietest time is late autumn and winter, around November.
Late autumn is cheapest, in November, when prices drop about 22 percent below the average. September is the most expensive, up to 40 percent above the average, during the La Mercè festival and the trade fairs.
Monday is usually the cheapest and Sunday the most expensive. If you can be flexible with dates, arriving early in the week often lowers the nightly rate.
It is cheapest further out, in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi and other fringe districts, where prices can be about 30 percent below the city average. The Eixample is the most popular among guests, and the Sant Pere area by the old town the most expensive. With the metro, a base further out is still convenient.
The Eixample or near Plaça Catalunya is the easiest base, with the metro to the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and the Gothic Quarter. It is a central base within reach of most attractions.
About a month ahead is enough for a regular trip. In September, during the La Mercè festival and trade fairs, and on weekends it is better to book earlier, as that is when rates rise most.
Barceloneta and El Poblenou are closest to the sand, within a walk of the beach. A good choice if you want to combine sightseeing with a swim in the Mediterranean.
